Behind the Scenes of an Emersion Team Meeting

Welcome to a behind-the-scenes look at the Emersion team—Doug Pagitt, Carla Barnhill, Tim Conder, Chad Allen, and myself, Brooke Nolen—at work. The team recently met in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Doug Pagitt hosted the meeting at Solomon’s Porch, a unique church community that he leads. On Sunday evening, I experienced firsthand Doug spinning around on a stool, barefoot in a room full of believers and seekers, while encouraging attendees to interact with his message. I felt very much at ease sitting on one of the couches among a welcoming community of folks desiring to live out their faith together in a real way. This church was the perfect place to help stimulate creative and challenging conversations with the Emersion team throughout the next few days. And this meaningful dialogue is why I am excited to have recently joined the Emersion team—and would love to help you join, too.

Hey all you writers!

Faithvine_logo_top Faithvine is having a writing contest. It’s simple: Log in to Faithvine (http://faithvine.com/contest/). Write an article. Best article gets $1,000. Plus, four other finalists will also get a lot of cash.

Just log in and submit an article that answers the question:
“What makes a Christian any different from anybody else?”

You and your peers, other Faithvine users, will rate each article, and the 25 highest-rated articles (semifinalists) will be selected for review by the Faithvine staff, which will narrow the selection down to 5 finalists. The finalists will then be arranged in order from First Place through Fifth Place. First Place will be awarded the Grand Prize of $1,000 and the remaining four finalists will also be awarded cash, from $500 to $250 and two awards of $125 each.

It would be great to have different perspectives to this question. I heard about this contest through the guys at Faithvine and Doug Pagitt. Apparently Doug will help judge the top 5 essays or something to that nature. Happy writing and good luck!

If you know of any other opportunities like this or any events I should post about, email me at emersion@bakerpublishinggroup.com.

Emergence Conference

a post-evangelical church for a post-Christian world?

Over the past several years there has been for some a growing uneasiness and for others an unprecedented excitement about the church among emerging generations. There is a movement afoot in our world called the "emerging church" that has called into question the normal way of doing church and being the church. Many are wondering if in our post-Christian world the church has become little more than a resting place for all things religious.

Join us for a unique weekend conversation that will feature many of the key leaders in the emerging church movement. This event will provide you with a first-hand experience with people who are re-imagining what the church can be for a post-Christian world. Come and interact with key leaders about the beliefs, practices and ways of engaging culture in the way of Jesus.

Emergent Midwest Gathering

A church of 10,000 people that meets in a mall...
A small urban community that meets in an art gallery...
An African-American church on the south-side of Chicago...
Web communities that connect tens of thousands of people...

What do all of these have in common? They are all emerging faith communities discovering what it means to be missional in their own unique context. AND they will all be represented at the first annual Midwest Emergent Gathering, July 20-21 in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. Come learn from Tony Jones (Emergent Village), Denise Van Eck (Mars Hill Bible Church), Spencer Burke (theOoze.com), Nanette Sawyer (Wicker Park Grace), Doug Pagitt (Solomon's Porch), Alise Barrymore & James King (The Emmaus Community), Will Samson (author of Justice in the Burbs) and many other missional practitioners from a wide diversity of backgrounds as we learn together about "Creating Missional Communities".

Contribute to the conversation as we discuss, network, and learn in community together via fast-paced mainstage sessions, interactive workshops, and unstructured times for dialogue with old or new friends. Whether mainline or evangelical, emerging or traditional, high church or de-churched, you will find inspiration and ideas to help you and your faith community become more effective agents for the mission of God in this hurting world.

The Midwest Emergent Gathering is being hosted by the Cardinal Drive Church of Christ at 2300 Cardinal Drive, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008.

Visit www.emergentmidwest.com to register or for more information.

*There will be a book release party for Justice in the Burbs at this event. More information to come.
